6 Steps to Turn Your Home into A Personal Retreat

We all love the feeling of a relaxing vacation retreat. Well, there’s no reason we can’t translate some of our favorite luxurious amenities into our very own home. Below are six tips for giving your home that home-away vibe.

1. Update your linens. What do top-notch spas and retreats always have? High quality bedding and towels. To give a little spa feeling to your bed and bathroom, splurge on the good stuff when it comes to linens.

2. Create a luxury zone. Whether it’s a pillow-lined reading nook in the kitchen or a garden patio blooming with your favorite flowers, create a space in your home that reads vacation. With your own relaxation station, vacation is only a few steps away.

3. Let in the light. A well-lit space always feels a bit more luxurious. Consider upgrading to larger windows, or add a skylight. If you can’t afford to update your windows, keep your space feeling light with light-colored paint, furniture and accessories.

4. Get a handle on clutter. It’s hard to feel at ease when your home is a mess. Creating a zen-like atmosphere requires more than a one-time cleaning plan. Sit down with your family to discuss de-cluttering and cleaning responsibilities. Having a family cleaning day can really help take your (neat, organized) home to the bed-and-breakfast level.

5. Make sure your front hallway is welcoming. Coming home to a cluttered entryway immediately sets the mood of the house. Create an inviting, appealing entryway by storing all shoes, jackets, umbrellas and bags out of sight. Add some interesting art to the wall, or make the space seem bigger with a mirror.

6. Turn your bedroom into a zen room. High-end hotels always have beds you never want to leave. Grant your own bedroom the same feeling with extra pillows, a cozy comforter and fresh flowers.

Whether you’re a first time buyer or searching for your second or third spot, purchasing a fixer upper—a house in need of some good TLC—is often a tempting option. They’re often moderately priced, and offer an abundance of opportunities for customization. But are they a solid investment?

Fixer uppers are literally everywhere, even in wealthy enclaves. What sets them apart is price. These homes have a lower market value than other houses in the immediate area because they have either been poorly maintained or, in some cases, abandoned.

To determine whether or not a property that interests you is a wise investment will require a lot of work. You will need to figure out what the average home in the area sells for, as well as the cost of the most desirable ones.

If you’re a newbie homeowner with minimal experience in property value, it may be in your best interest to avoid run-down properties needing extensive work. Instead, consider starting with a property that only needs minor cosmetic work – one that can be completely refurbished with paint, wallpaper, new floor and window coverings, landscaping, and new appliances.

Keep in mind that a home price that looks too good to be true probably is. Find out why before pouring your hard-earned money into it.

When looking for a fixer-upper, follow this basic strategy: find the least desirable home in the most desirable neighborhood. Then decide if the expense that is needed to repair the property is within your budget.
